The Glass Eye Logo These elegant floor model telescopes will become the envy of all who see them in your home or office.  We thought you'd enjoy reading about the history and attention to detail of these fine instruments. As well as some of the FAQs about The Glass Eye Telescopes.

Some Telescope History And The Glass Eye Floor Models
Telescopes have played an important part in the history of the world - particularly during the Eighteenth Century when navigation and mapping of the oceans were becoming predominant. It was an absolute necessity to have an optical instrument on board for a vessel to operate in and out of any port. When ocean shipping came to the forefront, this same type of telescope was then placed in the harbor so that scheduling of cargo deportation could take place. The scheduling personnel worked in small buildings called “counting houses.” The telescopes were used for observing incoming ships and listing their flags of origin. Thus the name “counting house telescope” or “trade telescope” became known throughout the world. The floors of theses various buildings were never quite level, and for the counting house telescope to be used with any accuracy, a plum-bob was attached to the instrument to give the observer some sort of alignment. This unique feature has become a trade mark of each and every floor model telescope from the “Glass Eye”. The entire line of instruments have been developed with all of the mystique and heritage of this bygone era. The manufacturing techniques require the highest standards possible. The finest raw materials and optics are combined along with the aesthetic appeal of hand-polished solid brass, rich genuine leather and hand finished oak, teakwood, or mahogany. All "Glass Eye" telescopes represent the ultimate in master craftsmanship; a precision optical instrument that is also a fine addition to the decor of any room or office.

Milling The Alt-Azimuth Yoke:
Milling the Yoke After starting with a natural brass casting, the “yoke” is machined into a precision part.  The procedure illustrated shows the two-step milling operation for shaft alignment.

Machining The Eyepiece End Cap:
Machining The Eyepiece End Cap Each and every eyepiece end cap is manufactured from solid brass.  It is entirely finished on a precision lathe with no tolerance greater than .003 of an inch allowed.

Hand Polishing The Brass:
Hand Polishing The Brass All component parts are hand-polished and individually coated with clear heat set urethane (baked at 300 degrees).  This will add years of non-tarnishing vivid natural color to the instrument.

A "Before And After Polishing" Look At Component Parts:
Before & After Polishing Components Each part illustrated clearly shows what it was and what it has become.  To use an old cliché, “One picture is worth a thousand words”, you can easily see that all of the parts shown are solid brass.

FAQs About These Fine Telescopes:
How far can you see with the "CAPE-COD" telescope?
You can see the craters on the moon, the moons of Planet Jupiter, and most everything you might want to see on the ground, with ease. Ours is a Terrestrial telescope that is used primarily on land, sea, or sky.

Why is the "CAPE-COD" power different than the one in the department store? They are marked 300x to 1000x.
The telescope in the department store has been designed to be used Celestially (on the stars, moon, etc.) . It has to be used at night, when it is dark and the object itself is the "light source". A Terrestrial telescope is used more during the daylight hours for watching birds, animals, ships, and people, using reflected light from the sun or electrical lights. At night, you can use as much magnification (or power) as the subject allows. During the day, smoke, smog, dust, fog, and most of all HEAT is amplified through the telescope as well as the object being seen. Most ground-based telescopes are 20x (power) to 30x (power) to allow maximum closeness and brightness without having distortion.

Are your telescopes "real" brass or plastic?
They are real brass - nothing is plated.

CAN I RAISE OR LOWER THE TELESCOPE?
Yes. Our telescope has a special "locking collar" on the main rod of the tripod. It can be raised or lowered but it has been set for general height.

What type of optics are used?
The objective lens is an "air spaced" achromat which is fully coated for maximum light grasp. The entire optical system has been matched. Our telescope has a unique erecting system that allows 18th century styling and only found in high quality optical instruments. The eyepiece is also achromatic and is matched to all other components.

Does the telescope tarnish and/or require a lot of upkeep?
All brass parts are coated with a heat-set urethane finish (not lacquer) and require only dusting with a clean, soft cloth. NOTE: You can not leave any brass telescope outside and expect it to stay the same, it will not. Inside your home, it will stay bright and shiny for years upon years.
