Most of the carpets woven in China’s classical period,
roughly from 1400 to 1750, were woven in the western province of Ningxia,
and for that reason are often called “Ningxia” carpets. Scrolling Lotuses is
a late 18th or early 19th century design typical of the “Ningxia” style,
with its sparse color palette consisting of shades of blue on an ivory
ground, with an outer band that serves to “frame” the composition. The
weavers and designers of Ningxia carpets were less interested in innovation,
and more so in refinement; hence the same, or similar, designs were used
over and over with little or no change. This Coaster Rug interpretation
features color-coordinated natural (oyster) color fringe accents.
