This is one of the most famous and highly revered of all
classic, Caucasian rug designs, and is traditionally called “Eagle Kazak.”
It comes from the mountainous Chelaberd region of the Karabagh, in the
southern Caucasus. Scholars believe the design is derived from earlier,
so-called, Dragon carpets whose designs symbolized happiness and good
fortune.
The name Lonea appears in Armenian script in the upper right corner. Perhaps
this was a dowry rug and it is the name of the weaver. Several of the
blossoms and other adornments are made from camel wool, and the floral crab
borders are well drawn. Note the two white birds at one end. Single
medallion examples, like this piece, are very rare.
